What Is So Special About October?
When you think of the month of October, your first thoughts probably go to crisp, cool mornings, Halloween decorations, and pumpkin spice everything. But did you know that there is something else that happens in October? October is Dental Hygiene Month, which means it’s a great time to review some practices that can help improve your dental health. Check out some simple ways to make sure that your teeth stay healthy.
Why is Dental Hygiene Critical to Your Overall Health?
Besides helping you have a dazzling smile, good oral hygiene is part of your overall health in ways that many people may not realize. Poor oral health has been linked to serious conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even dementia. While they may not seem related, harmful bacteria in your mouth can easily travel to other parts of your body, causing many kinds of inflammation and disease. There are simple, everyday tasks that can help make certain that your oral health remains in tiptop shape.
How Can I Improve My Oral Health?
- Brush Twice a Day For Two Minutes – Brushing your teeth twice a day doesn’t only help battle morning breath and that lingering gross taste in your mouth, but it also helps reduce the chances that you will develop gum disease. So, every morning and every night, squeeze that toothpaste onto your toothbrush and get brushing for a solid two minutes.
- Floss Every Day – Even brushing twice a day doesn’t get into those tight cracks and crevices between your teeth. Flossing daily will help remove lingering plaque that can lead to cavities or gum disease.
- Rinse With Mouthwash – There are several reasons to make mouthwash part of your oral hygiene routine. It can help get your teeth cleaner and whiter. Using a mouthwash or rinse can help prevent or reduce tartar and plaque. Some mouth rinses also contain ingredients to help whiten teeth.
Your daily habits are crucial to your overall oral health. Still, even the most dutiful brushers and flossers need to see a dentist regularly. At minimum, you should see your dentist for checkups and cleanings twice a year. They will be able to spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions.
