Sedation Dentistry Open House
Does the thought of going to the dentist send you into a panic? Or maybe you are so nervous about the dentist that you have been avoiding a needed treatment. If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Approximately 75% of adults in the United States share this same fear. There is a solution to your fears and worries with sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry is the process of using medications in various forms to calm a patient before and during a dental procedure. It can also help make a patient more comfortable while undergoing a lengthy treatment. Sedation dentistry is sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry. However, this name is deceiving because, with sedation dentistry, you are never actually asleep, just in a calm state, similar to when you are sleeping. We will be sharing all the need-to-know details about sedation dentistry at our upcoming open house on October 8th. As a preview to what you will learn at the open house, these are two forms of sedation dentistry that we offer in our office.
Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, as it is more commonly known, is a gas that is breathed through the nose, creating a sense of calm and relaxing you during a procedure. Since it is a gas, the effects wear off almost immediately.
Oral Sedation – Oral sedation, or conscious sedation, involves taking a pill before coming to the office. This form of sedation leaves you extremely calm and somewhat drowsy, but you are still able to respond and answer questions. Because it results in a deeper sedation, patients who use oral sedation must be driven to and from their appointments.
Many patients avoid going to the dentist, which can lead to further damage and the need for more treatments. You might be a great candidate for sedation dentistry if one or more of the following describes you:
- Fear of going to the dentist and dental related procedures
- Past bad dental experiences
- Sensitive to the smells of the dentist’s office
- Overly sensitive gag reflex
- Need a large amount of dental work completed
