What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
Do you find yourself experiencing tooth sensitivity regularly? It is not uncommon to feel slight discomfort from time to time if you bite into a cold ice cream. However, if you notice that you feel discomfort each time you eat something hot or cold or when you brush your teeth, you may be experiencing a problem with your oral health. Tooth sensitivity is one of the warnings your teeth give off to alert you that something isn’t right with your oral health. We want to share what can cause tooth sensitivity:
Dental Treatments
- It is not uncommon to experience tooth sensitivity following certain dental treatments. This may occur following a filling, dental crown, or root canal. Please do not be alarmed if you feel some discomfort for a few days, but it will dissipate over time.
Brushing Too Hard
- If you brush your teeth too hard, you can damage your tooth enamel. When the tooth enamel begins to wear away, the nerves inside the tooth become closer to being exposed, which can cause sensitivity.
Cracks in Your Teeth
- Sudden sensitivity can be an indication that you have a crack in your tooth enamel. Between visits to our office, be sure to regularly visually inspect your teeth as well as feel around with your tongue for any signs of cracks or chips.
Teeth Whitening
- One of the reasons we recommend professional teeth whitening is to ensure that we can monitor the strength of the whitening agent. Over-the-counter products are not customized to fit your needs, and the strength of the solution can damage your teeth.
Gum Disease
- If you notice that your gums are pulling away from your teeth, you may be experiencing gum disease. Exposure of the tooth root due to recessed gums can lead to serious sensitivity problems.
