Sedation Dentistry

You No Longer Have To Be Afraid

Do you ever wish you could sail through dental visits without anxiety or fear? Would you rather endure an agonizing toothache than go to the dentist? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, you could be a perfect candidate for sedation dentistry. With sedation dentistry, you can forget about fear and focus on pure relaxation.

Who Can Benefit From Oral Sedation Dentistry?

People who:

  • Suffer from dental phobia or anxiety
  • Experienced traumatic past dental treatments
  • Do not get numb easily
  • Have extremely sensitive teeth
  • Need a large amount of dental work completed
  • Gag easily
  • Fear needles
  • Dislike the sights, sounds, and smells associated with dental treatment
  • Are embarrassed about the amount of dental work needed

Anxious patients no longer have to be afraid of the dentist. The dental care you need can be completed while you are completely relaxed and comfortable. It IS possible for you to smile with confidence and chew without pain.

Levels of Sedation

There are different levels of sedation to accommodate every patient. The level of sedation used is determined by your needs and the treatment you’re committing to.

Minimal Sedation

Minimal sedation involves inhaling nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). Nitrous oxide helps you relax and wears off quickly. Nitrous oxide can be combined with a drug-free sedation option called NuCalm®. Used by the world’s top athletes, pilots, dentists, medical practitioners, and cancer treatment centers, NuCalm®, uses biochemistry, physics, and neurophysiology to create a state of deeper relaxation. With these treatments, patients can safely drive themselves to and from their dental visit.

Moderate Sedation

The deepest level of moderate sedation is achieved with oral conscious sedation. We use select oral medications for deep relaxation, which allows the patient to receive a great deal of dentistry at one visit with little or no memory of the appointment. With this level of sedation, the patient will need to be escorted to and from the appointment. It is a great way to experience dentistry, especially for time-stressed and fearful patients.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation dentistry is the use of oral sedation medications administered before (and sometimes during) a dental procedure to relax and calm the dental patient.

There are many benefits to oral sedation dentistry. Sedation with oral medications means there are no needles. You do not actually sleep during treatment, but you will be sedated enough to feel utterly relaxed. By the next day, most patients remember little-to-nothing of the time they spent in the dental chair. The memories of the office’s sights, sounds, and smells – which can often be traumatizing to people – will be gone.

With sedation dentistry, time seems to pass very quickly, so hours feel like minutes. Oral sedation enables your dentist to work more efficiently and complete more treatments in fewer visits. It’s a great option if you need a large amount of dental care completed at one time. Many dental procedures can be completed with the help of sedation dentistry, including crown work, routine extractions, dentures, filling cavities, gum care, tooth whitening, bonding, and typical hygiene.

Treatment

After a consultation and health history review are completed, you and we will decide on a treatment plan that’s right for you. We will select the best oral sedation medications and doses to meet your individual needs. Often a pill is given to take the night before the appointment and/or one hour prior. You will then arrive with your companion at the office already feeling relaxed. Once there, we will decide whether or not to administer more medication.

Common Questions

No. You will be in an extremely relaxed state and will most likely not remember the appointment. However, you will be conscious and responsive the entire time.

Yes, at all times. Your vital signs will be taken through the sedation appointment. One of our team will always be with you.

Yes, you will need a companion to drive you to and from your appointment.

Each person’s recovery time is different based on their body as well as the medications and dosages used. Plan on relaxing at home for the remainder of the day after your appointment. Have your companion stay with you until you are fully recovered.

You Deserve the Best Quality Dental Care

If cared for properly, your teeth can look beautiful and function just as nature intended. Taking chances with something as important as your teeth is ill-advised, to say the least. Take chances on different paint colors for your house, a new restaurant, or an author you’ve been meaning to read; when it comes to your teeth, however, treat yourself to the dental care you deserve. You work hard and your teeth work hard for you. Take care of yourself and your teeth so that they will last.
